I really had no idea what to expect from Spit Shined. I'm in a quandary as to how to score it, because it's not perfect and it's probably not suitable for all tastes (and thank God it doesn't try) so the score takes that into account - it'll be better or worse depending on taste. I had my doubts about the premise, and if I'm being honest I still do. However, for the most part I was surprised at just how well Brandon has turned an unusual little idea into quite a satisfying production. I suppose the quirky theme is roughly akin to something one might expect Joey Silvera to come up with. While I enjoyed Tina Crystal and especially Daphnye, the movie is actually at its weakest during these relatively conventional sex scenes. What's more interesting is the way Brandon works the fetish aspects into the sex, creating some intriguing and amusing little set-ups without taking it all too desperately seriously.
That said, the hardcore does get pretty serious, no more so than with Julie Night, and the scenes with Mandy and with Layla do supply a fair share of exciting sex that struggles with the shackles of convention without entirely breaking free. What I think is best about this and Brandon's other movie I reviewed lately, Ten Little Piggies, is that he's putting material that he seems to have a real feeling for into his movies and is slowly but surely breaking away from formula porn to create some more personal, individual and interesting material. As I say, I'm not sure that the "Spit Shine" thing really works for me, but it's far from being the sum and substance of the movie.
